I have used the caption-width settings (new?). I find they work fine in IE8/Safari/Firefox/Chrome. But in Opera and IE7, (no ie 6 to try...) it stays at the default of 300.

The images in the following link have a caption-width set to 600.

I've gone with caption:bottom for now. Hope you can take a look at this when you get time.
